Highly interesting species, especially for hot dry climates. It is extremely drought resistant and winter hardy. It is fairly wear resistant. Its leaves are quite coarse but form a quite bright green compact turf. However, varieties have recently been selected with thiner leaves and denser foliage than forage varieties. Emergence and radication are slow, so spring-summer weeds may impair good root. However, once the lawn has been established it is considerably weedcompetitive. It vegetates well in almost any type of soil. It is suitable for intense wear soccer or rugby fields in mixtures also containing perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass.
